            BRAINLINK WRITERS' WORKSHOP

                                    Their Story

In 2008, BrainLink began to fund and facilitate a Writers’ Workshop for people with ABI (Acquired Brain Injury). This group was begun in the spirit of the now-defunct Headway Writers Group, and it’s now run by the same wonderful facilitators, Gabrielle Brown Lee and Janet Stumbo.

Gabrielle & Janet each have plenty of writing and publishing experience, and both have endured an ABI, so they completely understand what it’s like to live with an ABI. Everyone is welcome, including those without an ABI, just as long as you attempt to write something!

No writing or computer experience is necessary. Writing is done with pen & paper (both provided). If someone can’t hold a pen, their carer or friend or one of the facilitators will write for them. Laptops, Litewriters, Blackberries – any personal technology – is welcomed & utilised.

Writing exercises are set for each workshop and are usually designed to promote creativity and use of writing to express feelings.

People are encouraged to read their writing out loud, or have someone read it for them. This is not essential but is something that many people enjoy.

We also have a number of guest speakers during the year who enhance the writing experience - people such as author & person with ABI Christine Durham; poet Emily Zoey Baker; writer, playwright, poet & radio host Stella Glorie have all attended and passed on their knowledge.

We use a meeting room at Collingwood Library that is comfortable & fully wheelchair accessible. Sandwiches, biscuits & tea & coffee are provided to keep us alert and on track!
