Changes to the NDIS

From 3rd October 2024, new laws come into effect that define what supports are funded by the NDIS. Some changes come into effect right away, while others will start at a later date as they are designed and implemented. The overarching goal of these changes is to return the NDIS to its original intent and improve the experience for all participants.

Key Highlights

  • New laws effective from 3rd October 2024 clarify what supports can and cannot be funded through the NDIS.
  • The NDIS supports list define: Items and services that can be purchased with funding and supports that are not eligible for funding.
  • A new replacement support process allows exceptions when a specific, approved alternative is required.
  • The changes provide greater transparency and accountability for participants, carers and providers.
  • Only reasonable and necessary supports related to a person's disability are now funded under the scheme.
  • Participants can use the updated lists to check what is covered before making a purchase.
  • The reforms aim to reduce confusion, improve consistency, and ensure funds are used for genuine disability support needs.
