Kylie's story
Kylie became a devoted carer to her husband, Bill, after his stroke on December 12, 2012, just two weeks after their engagement party. It was a time that was meant to be filled with joy and anticipation, but it quickly transformed into a path of resilience, adaptation, and unwavering love following Bill's stroke.
The sudden transition to full-time caring drastically changed their lives, shifting from two incomes to relying solely on a pension. Their dreams and plans were altered, with holidays becoming rare and outings centred around Bill’s needs. Despite these challenges, Kylie learned to treasure the small moments they could share together.
The arrival of their daughter brought new purpose and joy. Kylie finds strength in the love she shares with Bill and their child, feeling grateful every day that Bill is with them. Support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been crucial, allowing Kylie to balance caring with part-time work. “It’s important for me to contribute financially to our family while still being there for Bill,” she explains.
Kylie’s journey has taught her the importance of asking for help, a lesson she wishes she had learned sooner. A pivotal moment came on their wedding day when Bill had a seizure, but with the support of friends and family, they adapted and made it a memorable day. This experience highlighted the power of community support. "I was overwhelmed with gratitude when I learned that ten people had stepped in to help prepare for the day,” she reflects. Her journey has shown her that love, support, and resilience can carry families through the most challenging of times.
Kylie’s story is an inspiring tribute to the strength of love and the challenges of caregiving. Her journey with Bill has not only shaped her life but has also deepened her appreciation for the everyday moments they share as a family. Through perseverance and the embrace of community, Kylie’s story serves as a beacon for new carers, reminding them of the importance of asking for help, cherishing each moment, and recognizing that they are not alone on this journey.
