Adhering to Professional Standards

The Victorian Disability Worker Commission (VDWC)

At BrainLink, we believe that everyone living with a brain injury and their caregivers deserve safe and respectful support. The Victorian Disability Worker Commission (VDWC) plays a critical role in making sure that happens.

Why the VDWC matters?

The VDWC is the independent regulator responsible for overseeing disability workers in Victoria. It sets and enforces standards that guide the behaviour, conduct and professional practice of disability workers. These standards ensure that you, as a participant or carer, can trust your support team with safety and reliability.

Victorian Disability Worker Commission standards endorsed by BrainLink

  1. Respect and dignity: Your values, rights, autonomy and preferences must be recognised and upheld.
  2. Safety and professionalism: Workers must operate safely and consistently, follow proper procedures, and maintain appropriate boundaries.
  3. Effective communication: You should be kept informed about your supports in a way you can understand, and your questions addressed.
  4. Quality and competence: Workers must have appropriate training and skills for the task.
  5. Accountability: If something goes wrong, or you have concerns about a worker's conduct, you have the right to speak up and get help.

What to do if you have a concern.

If you feel a disability worker isn't meeting the required standards - here's what you do:

  1. Raise the issue with your support coordinator or provider first, if you feel comfortable.
  2. Visit the VDWC website and review their guidance on making a complaint.
  3. If necessary, you can make a formal report to the VDWC. The commission investigates misconduct and enforces responses such as training requirements or suspension.
  4. BrainLink is here to help. You can reach out to your BrainLink Support Coordinator for guidance and support with next steps.
