As BrainLink celebrates 20 years, we are proud to recognise a remarkable family whose journey has been intertwined with BrainLink from some of its earliest days Angela, Helen and Ian Barker.

In 2002, at just 16 years of age, Angela’s life changed forever when she was violently assaulted, resulting in a severe axonal brain injury.

Her family was initially told that Angela might never recover. She spent weeks in hospital, followed by months of rehabilitation, and ultimately found herself living in a nursing home an experience that would profoundly shape the direction of her life.

For Helen and Ian, Angela’s parents, the years that followed were defined by love, determination and an unwavering belief in their daughter. They supported Angela through the uncertainty of her recovery and the many challenges of navigating life after brain injury.

BrainLink was there alongside the Barker family, providing trusted information, guidance and support as they navigated the complex disability and healthcare systems.

For a family facing an uncertain future, having someone who understood brain injury and could help them find their way made an important difference.

Helen also became a passionate BrainLink volunteer, helping raise awareness of brain injury and connecting other families with information, support and resources.

For Angela, recovery was not simply about regaining physical abilities. Over time, she rebuilt her communication, independence and confidence, and found a powerful new purpose in sharing her experience with others.

Angela began speaking out about the experiences of young people with disability and the need for alternatives to aged care. She went on to become a respected advocate for people living with disability and survivors of domestic violence, sharing her story with thousands of students and communities across Australia.

Her achievements have been extraordinary. Angela has spoken at the United Nations, was named Victoria’s Young Australian of the Year in 2011 and received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019 for her service to the community.

Behind these achievements is a story about the power of family, connection and the right support.

Today, Angela continues to advocate for others while building the life she has worked so hard to create. As she prepares to marry her partner, Phil, and embrace greater independence in their own home, her journey continues to evolve.

For BrainLink, the Barker family represents something deeply important to our 20-year history.

Supporting someone after brain injury is about supporting the person, their family, their aspirations and their future.

Angela’s story is a reminder of what can be possible when people are surrounded by those who believe in them and when families don't have to navigate the journey alone.
